Homework and Exams

HOMEWORK: GR. 5-12
Homework for Gr. 5-12 is designed to help choristers learn the material and retain it so that they can more easily pass the exams. Parents may choose to have their child start the year by attempting the homework component. If a child is struggling greatly with the homework, parents can elect to discontinue with the homework by informing the director.

Choristers participating in the homework component of the course will receive two workbooks at the start of each year. Each level has a calendar indicating assignment due dates. Choristers are STRONGLY urged to check over corrected homework and to ask their instructors for help, if necessary, so that they can move on in their studies.

EXAMS
All St. Cecilia & St. Gregory choristers, Gr. 5-12, are required to have a year-end private singing assessment with the director to check vocal technique and ear-training issues.

All St. Cecilia & St. Gregory choristers, Gr. 5-12, are required to take Theory & Catholic Music Education exams. If a chorister will not be returning to the choir the following year, the parents may petition for their child to be excused from the exams. However, choristers are strongly encouraged to take the exams as a learning experience even if they will not be returning.

To advance to the next level, students must receive a score of 80% or higher on all three exams (Theory, Catholic Music Education, and Sight Singing). Students are allowed to retake the exam if they receive a score lower than 80% on one or two exams. If a student does not receive a score 80% or above on any of the three exams, he or she must repeat the same level the next year.
